The essentials
- The principle: a profile is a landing page. In 3 seconds it must say who you are, for whom, and what to do next.
- The five common elements: a searchable name, an identifiable visual, a customer-focused bio with keywords, a link to a useful page, proof (reviews, figures, pinned content).
- What changes by network: LinkedIn favours the headline and the company page, Instagram the grid and story highlights, TikTok the first video, YouTube the banner and the channel trailer.
- Measurement: profile visits, link clicks (UTM), qualified followers, incoming messages.
Every campaign, every post and every ad brings visitors back to a profile. If it is incomplete, dated or vague, those visitors leave and the budget spent on social ads or on content creation is wasted. Optimising a profile is the cheapest and most profitable job in social marketing: a few hours, once every six months. Here are the common rules, then the specifics of each network, with a checklist and the metrics to check the effect.
The five elements common to all profiles
| Element | Rule | Frequent mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Name and handle | The exact name of the brand or the person, identical on every network, with the activity if the platform allows it (“Dupont Menuiserie”) | Different handles from one network to another, keywords stuffed into the name |
| Profile picture | A logo legible at 40 pixels or a sharp portrait on a plain background; the same everywhere | Group photo, logo with illegible text, image that changes every month |
| Bio or description | For whom, what result, where (if local), what to do (call to action); keywords that customers type | Abstract slogan, list of values, no location, no call to action |
| Link | A dedicated page (offer, appointment booking, link page) with UTM parameters | Generic home page with no tracking |
| Proof | Reviews, figures (customers, years, projects), pinned content that shows the work | Nothing pinned, latest post 8 months old |
Add consistency in the practical information: address, phone and opening hours identical to the Google listing and to the site (see NAP consistency). The networks are indexed by Google and the AI engines; a complete profile shows up on brand searches.
LinkedIn: personal profile and company page
- Headline: 220 characters; the result you deliver and to whom, not the job title alone (“Helps industrial small businesses recruit technicians | Cabinet X”). It is the most read and the most searched field.
- Photo and banner: a professional portrait; a banner with the promise and the website.
- About section: the first 3 lines are visible without a click; start with the customer and their problem.
- Selection: pin 3 pieces of content that prove your expertise (case study, article, video).
- Company page: a full description with keywords, sector, size, location, an action button (visit the site, contact), 3 followed hashtags, regular posts. A complete company page is eligible for LinkedIn Ads campaigns and for prospecting; see social selling.
Instagram: the grid and story highlights
- Profile name (different from the handle): 64 searchable characters; include the activity and the city (“Atelier Léa · Céramique Nantes”).
- Bio: 150 characters, in short lines; for whom, what, where, call to action towards the link.
- Links: up to 5 links in the bio since 2023; use them for the offer, booking and reviews.
- Story highlights: 4 to 6 categories with consistent covers (prices, reviews, work, behind the scenes, FAQ); they act as a miniature website.
- Grid: the first 9 posts must show the work; pin 3 posts.
- Professional account with category, contact details and contact buttons, essential for the statistics and for Meta Ads campaigns.
Facebook, TikTok, YouTube
| Network | Priorities |
|---|---|
| Facebook (page) | A precise category, address and opening hours, an action button (call, book, message), Reviews section enabled, a cover photo with an offer, a complete About section; the page feeds Meta Business Suite and the ads |
| TikTok | An 80-character bio with the promise; a business account with a link; first video pinned = a 20-second introduction; handle identical to the other networks |
| YouTube | A banner stating frequency and theme, a channel trailer featured for non-subscribers, a channel description with keywords and links, playlists by topic, a custom handle |
Checking the effect
Native statistics give profile visits and link clicks. Add UTM parameters to the link (source = instagram, medium = social, campaign = bio) to read in GA4 the sessions and conversions coming from the profile; the method is in sources, mediums and UTM. Compare over 30 days before and after the optimisation: profile visits, link click-through rate (clicks divided by visits), new followers, incoming messages. A link click-through rate below 3% points to a bio or a link that needs reworking. The full metrics are in the SMO KPIs.
Half-yearly checklist
- Name, handle and visual identical on every network.
- Bio reread with the keywords customers use and a call to action.
- Link up to date, with UTM, to a page that converts.
- Pinned or highlighted content refreshed.
- Contact details, opening hours and buttons checked.
- Professional accounts and access (admins) checked; former staff removed.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have to be on every network?
No. Choose 2 or 3 networks where your customers spend time and keep them up to date. Reserve your name on the others with a minimal profile (visual, bio, link to the main network) to avoid impersonation, without posting there.
Which keywords should go in a bio?
The ones your customers type in the network's search or in Google: your trade, your speciality, your city. On Instagram and LinkedIn, internal search reads the name and the headline; put the main word there rather than in the description alone.
Do you need a link page tool (Linktree, etc.)?
Useful on Instagram and TikTok if you have several destinations. Prefer a link page hosted on your own site: it keeps the traffic with you, is measured in GA4 and can be customised. Add a different UTM for each link.
How often should you update your profile?
A full review every six months, and an immediate update whenever the offer, the contact details or a campaign changes. Pinned content and story highlights are refreshed as new work comes in.
