How do you build a campaign that performs on LinkedIn Ads?

The targeting that justifies the price, the formats that convert in B2B, the bidding settings and the costs to expect in 2026

The essentials

  • LinkedIn is justified when the value of a customer exceeds €2,000 to €3,000 and the target is defined by a job, a function or a company size.
  • 2026 French costs: CPM €25 to €60, CPC €5 to €12, cost per lead €40 to €150 with native forms, €80 to €300 with a form on your site.
  • Targeting: an audience of 50,000 to 300,000 members, built by function and seniority rather than by job title, with exclusions.
  • Minimum budget: €2,500 to €3,000 a month to obtain a usable volume of leads; below that, LinkedIn serves as a retargeting channel.

LinkedIn Ads is the most expensive platform in social ads, and the only one that allows precise targeting of a function, a seniority level, a sector and a company size. That price is justified for high-value B2B offers; it ruins the others. Here is how to build a campaign in Campaign Manager in 2026, the formats that work, the bidding settings and realistic costs in France.

Checking that LinkedIn is the right channel

Three conditions together:

  • The value of a customer (margin over the life of the relationship) exceeds €2,000 to €3,000, otherwise a cost per lead of €80 to €150 and a sales conversion rate of 10 to 20% cannot be amortised.
  • The target can be described in professional criteria: HR managers in companies of 200 to 2,000 employees, finance directors in the industrial sector, and so on.
  • Content or an offer to put forward exists: white paper, webinar, audit, demonstration. LinkedIn converts badly on a cold “request a quote”.

If one of the conditions is missing, Meta with lookalike audiences built from your B2B customers often works out cheaper; the comparison is developed in B2B vs B2C platforms.

Choosing the objective and the format

ObjectiveRecommended formatTypical 2026 costUse
Lead generationSponsored content with a native form (Lead Gen Form)€40 to €150 per leadWhite paper, webinar, free audit; the pre-filled form multiplies the conversion rate by 2 to 3
On-site conversionsSponsored image or video content to a dedicated page€80 to €300 per leadDemonstration, trial, appointment booking; requires the Insight Tag
Awareness with a target audienceShort video, carousel, Thought Leader Ads (a sponsored post from an executive)CPM €25 to €60First step before retargeting
Target accounts (ABM)Sponsored content + an imported company listCPM €50 to €100Complex sales over 100 to 1,000 named accounts
MessagesConversation Ads (sponsored messaging)€0.50 to €1.50 per sendEvent invitation; effectiveness declining, test with caution

Thought Leader Ads, which sponsor a post published by a person (executive, expert) rather than by the company page, obtain in 2026 engagement rates two to four times higher than brand content, for an equivalent CPM. They are the best entry point for an SME with no awareness. The interface itself is described in LinkedIn Campaign Manager.

Building the targeting

LinkedIn's precision is also its trap: too many criteria stacked up give an audience of 5,000 people at a CPM of €120. Benchmarks:

  1. Target size: 50,000 to 300,000 members for a lead campaign in France. Under 20,000, costs soar and frequency explodes.
  2. Function and seniority rather than job title: titles are heterogeneous and exclude part of the target. “Function: finance” + “Seniority: director, VP, senior executive” covers more than “Finance director”.
  3. Company size and sector as filters, not as main criteria.
  4. Exclusions: your employees, your existing customers (imported list), students, competitors.
  5. Audience expansion disabled to keep control; enable it only if volume is lacking.

Retargeting is possible on site visitors (via the Insight Tag), people who have interacted with an ad or a video, and those who opened a form. A retargeting campaign at 15 to 20% of the budget noticeably improves the overall cost per lead.

Setting bids and budget

SettingRecommendationNote
Bidding strategyMaximum delivery (automatic) at launch; manual CPC bidding after 2 weeks if the cost exceeds the targetManual bidding reduces volume, not only cost
Daily budget€80 to €100 minimum per campaignUnder €50 a day, delivery is erratic
Monthly budget€2,500 to €3,000 minimum for a lead campaignProduces 20 to 60 leads depending on the sector

Attribution window30 days after a click, 7 days after a viewCompare with GA4 over 30 days

Budget orders of magnitude by platform are detailed in what budget to plan for SMA.

The creatives that work in B2B

  • One message per ad: the reader's problem, the figure that proves it, the resource on offer.
  • A short introductory text: under 150 characters before the “see more”, with the hook in the first line.
  • A 15 to 30 second video with a person facing the camera and subtitles, rather than a brand animation.
  • The native form with 3 to 5 fields maximum; each additional field reduces the conversion rate by 5 to 10%.
  • Three to four variants per campaign, renewed every 4 to 6 weeks; the LinkedIn audience is small and frequency rises fast.

Measuring and qualifying leads

The LinkedIn cost per lead means nothing without the sales qualification rate. Export leads from native forms to your CRM (native integration or connector) and track the appointment rate obtained and the signature rate. A lead at €100 with 30% appointments and 20% signature costs €1,670 per customer; that is the figure to compare with your margin. The method for reconciling with GA4 is described in conversion tracking in SMA.

Our advice: before launching, have an executive or an expert from the company publish three organic posts on the campaign's subject, then sponsor the one that worked best as a Thought Leader Ad. You start from content already validated by the audience, at a cost per engagement well below brand content.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum budget for testing LinkedIn Ads?

Around €2,500 to €3,000 over a month, so €80 to €100 a day on a lead generation campaign. That budget produces 250 to 500 clicks and 20 to 60 leads depending on the sector, a volume sufficient to measure a qualification rate. Under €1,000, keep LinkedIn for retargeting visitors to your site.

Native form or landing page?

The native form (Lead Gen Form) obtains a conversion rate 2 to 3 times higher, because it is pre-filled with profile data. The landing page gives more qualified leads, because the effort is greater, and feeds GA4. Start with the native form for volume, then test the page if quality is insufficient.

How can you reduce cost per lead on LinkedIn?

Widen an audience that is too narrow, move from a job title to a function, sponsor a personal post rather than a page post, cut the form to 3 or 4 fields, add a retargeting campaign and stop delivery at weekends if your data justifies it. A fall of 20 to 40% is realistic.

Does LinkedIn Ads work for a small business?

Yes if the offer is B2B, the target identifiable by its function and the value of a customer above €2,000 to €3,000. A consultancy, a software publisher or a professional training organisation get their money's worth. An SME selling to consumers or low-margin products should favour Meta.
