The essentials
- Before the campaign: pixel and conversions API installed, main event tested, landing page loading in under 3 seconds on mobile.
- 2026 structure: one campaign per objective, few ad sets, broad audiences with Advantage+, and differentiation carried by the creatives.
- Creatives: 3 to 5 variants per set, vertical video first, a hook in the first 3 seconds, renewal every 4 to 6 weeks.
- Test budget: €1,000 to €1,500 over at least 14 days before drawing any conclusion; judge on cost per conversion, not on CPC.
A Facebook and Instagram Ads campaign that works in 2026 looks little like one from 2020. Detailed targeting has lost its importance, broad audiences steered by the algorithm dominate, and the ad creative has become the main performance lever. Here is the method in seven steps, with the settings that make the difference in Meta Ads Manager and the thresholds for judging the result.
Step 1: prepare measurement and the destination
Nothing launches without three checks:
- The Meta pixel and the conversions API send the main event (purchase, lead, enquiry) and it appears in the event testing tool; the details are in the Meta pixel.
- The landing page loads in under 3 seconds on mobile, with a promise identical to that of the ad and a single call to action.
- UTM parameters are filled in at ad level so the campaign can be found in GA4.
Step 2: choose the objective and the optimisation event
Meta Ads Manager offers six objectives: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion, sales. The objective determines which profiles the algorithm looks for; it is therefore chosen not on price but on the action expected. For an e-commerce site, “sales” optimised on purchase; for a services business, “leads” optimised on the form or the site's “lead” conversion. The cases are covered in detail in which objectives to choose.
If the expected conversion volume is under 50 per week, optimise temporarily on a more frequent event (add to basket, enquiry) to exit the learning phase, then move back up to the final event.
Step 3: structure the campaign
| Level | Recommended 2026 setting | To avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | One objective, budget at campaign level (Advantage+ budget) to let Meta allocate it | Several objectives in one campaign, fragmented budgets |
| Ad set | 2 to 3 sets maximum: broad prospecting, retargeting, possibly a test | 10 sets with different interests and €20 a day each |
| Ads | 3 to 5 creatives per set, formats suited to each placement | A single creative, a square visual stretched to vertical |
The rule underlying this structure: each set must reach roughly 50 conversions a week to stabilise learning. Fragmenting prevents that. The full organisation of an account is described in structuring a Meta Ads account.
Step 4: define the audiences
In prospecting, the Advantage+ audience (broad, with your suggestions as a starting point) delivers in 2026 results equal to or better than interest targeting in most accounts, as soon as the pixel has built up history. Keep three settings:
- The real geographic area of your business, without overestimating the radius.
- Exclusions: customers from the last 180 days, recent converters, visitors already in retargeting.
- A 1 to 3% lookalike audience based on your best customers, as a signal rather than a constraint; the method is in lookalike audiences.
In retargeting, target visitors from 7 to 30 days, unconverted basket additions and people who have interacted with your ads or your Instagram account, with a message different from prospecting.
Step 5: produce the creatives
The creative explains the largest share of performance. The criteria that distinguish the ads that work in 2026:
| Criterion | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Vertical 9:16 video of 10 to 30 seconds, plus a 4:5 version for the feed | Reels and Stories account for more than half of impressions |
| Hook | The problem or the benefit in the first 3 seconds, with subtitles | More than 70% of videos are watched without sound |
| Style | Content that looks like what users post (UGC), testimonials, demonstrations | A visual that is too “advertising-like” is ignored in the feed |
| Text | One idea per ad, price or offer visible, explicit call to action | The reader decides in under 2 seconds |
| Volume | 3 to 5 different variants (angle, format, person), not 5 versions of the same visual | The algorithm concentrates the budget on the winning variant |
A review checklist to use before going live is in validating your ad creatives.
Step 6: set the budget and launch
Allow €1,000 to €1,500 over 14 days for a first test with a single prospecting set. Launch on automatic bidding (lowest cost), with no cost cap until you have a benchmark. Change nothing during the first 7 days, except in case of an obvious error: every significant change restarts learning.
Step 7: read the results and decide
After 14 days, three metrics are enough:
- Cost per conversion compared with the value of the conversion (margin or value of a lead). Under 50% of that value, increase the budget in 20% steps; above 100%, change the creatives before touching the audiences.
- Outbound CTR: under 0.8%, the creatives are not catching on.
- Page conversion rate: under 1% in e-commerce or 3% in lead generation, the problem is after the click.
The campaigns to keep are those that stay profitable three weeks in a row. The list of metrics by objective is detailed in the KPIs of an SMA campaign.
How GreenRed helps
Rather than juggling several tools, GreenRed's SMO / SMA Social media module brings these metrics together in a single dashboard, compares them over time and tells you which actions come first. You can try it free, with no card, from the Pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Should Facebook and Instagram be separated into distinct campaigns?
No in most cases. Automatic placements let Meta arbitrate between the two networks according to cost per result, which gives better results than a manual split. Separate only if you have a strong creative reason (very different visuals) or if one network never converts after a month of data.
How long does the learning phase last?
Until the ad set records roughly 50 optimisation events over a rolling 7 days, generally 4 to 10 days with a sufficient budget. During this phase, costs are unstable and 20 to 40% higher than they will be afterwards. Changing the budget by more than 20%, the audience or the creatives restarts the counter.
Should you use Advantage+ Shopping campaigns?
For an e-commerce business with a catalogue and at least 50 purchases a week, yes: they automate audiences, placements and creatives and often obtain a cost per purchase 10 to 30% lower than manual campaigns. Below that volume, a classic “sales” campaign with a broad audience remains easier to read.
What is the minimum budget for a first campaign?
Around €50 a day on a single ad set for two weeks, so €700 for a readable test in lead generation, and €1,000 to €1,500 in e-commerce where conversions are rarer. Below that, the results do not allow a campaign that works to be distinguished from statistical chance.
