The essentials
- Definition: Advantage+ is the name of Meta's range of automations, from a simple setting (placements, budget) to the fully automated campaign for e-commerce.
- What is automated: targeting, placements, budget allocation, creative combinations, and sometimes image and text edits.
- 2026 benchmarks: Advantage+ Shopping shows ROAS of 3 to 8 in e-commerce, with 30 to 50% of sales coming from existing customers if they are not excluded.
- The condition: reliable measurement (pixel and conversions API) and at least 50 conversions per week; otherwise the algorithm does not learn.
Advantage+ is the name Meta gives to all its automation features in Ads Manager. The term covers very different realities, which explains much of the confusion: it refers both to simple options (automatic placements, budget spread automatically across ad sets) and to campaigns run entirely by the algorithm, where the advertiser supplies only a catalogue, a budget and creative. The management interface is presented in Meta Ads Manager.
What the range covers
| Feature | What it automates | Level of control retained |
|---|---|---|
| Advantage+ placements | Allocation across feed, Stories, Reels, Audience Network | Exclusions possible by platform |
| Advantage campaign budget | Budget allocation across ad sets | Total budget and caps |
| Advantage+ audience | Expansion beyond the targeting entered | Targeting becomes a suggestion |
| Advantage+ creative | Cropping, filters, text variants, music | Can be enabled option by option |
| Advantage+ Shopping | Complete campaign for e-commerce: targeting, placements, creative, budget | Catalogue, budget, exclusions, creative supplied |
| Advantage+ App | The equivalent for app promotion | Same |
When automation beats a manual campaign
Three conditions make Advantage+ preferable. Enough conversion volume, in the region of fifty per week, without which the algorithm has nothing to learn from and simply explores. A catalogue or a broad offer, which gives it something to personalise from person to person. And reliable measurement, with a deduplicated pixel and conversions API, failing which the automation optimises on false signals, as explained in CAPI. Taken together, these conditions usually produce 10 to 30% more results than an equivalent manual structure, mainly because the algorithm tests more combinations than a human can handle.
Conversely, a manual campaign remains preferable for a very narrow, well-identified audience, for a small budget spread over few conversions, for a single offer with no catalogue, and whenever the advertiser must keep exact control of the targeting, particularly for regulatory reasons.
The settings that matter
- Exclude existing customers: the single most important setting in acquisition. Without it, 30 to 50% of attributed sales come from customers who would have bought anyway, and the ROAS shown no longer means anything.
- Set the share of new customers: Advantage+ Shopping lets you define a minimum budget reserved for new customers; this is the lever that separates acquisition from retention.
- Supply several creatives: six to ten variants, vertical, subtitled, with different angles; the algorithm creates nothing, it chooses.
- Turn off unwanted automatic edits: the cropping and filters applied to brand visuals sometimes produce results that clash with the brand guidelines.
- Let it run: seven to fourteen days of learning without changes, as for any Meta campaign; see creating an effective Facebook and Instagram Ads campaign.
- Do not stack campaigns: several Advantage+ campaigns on the same audience compete against each other in the auction and push the cost up.
Reading the results
| Metric | Where to read it | Alert threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Net ROAS | GA4 or the back office, not Ads Manager | A gap of more than 50% with the reported ROAS |
| Share of new customers | Dedicated report in Ads Manager | Below 40% in an acquisition campaign |
| Frequency | Ads Manager, over 7 days | Above 3, audience fatigue |
| Placement breakdown | Breakdown by placement | A large share on Audience Network with no conversion |
| View-through conversions | Comparison of attribution windows | More than 40% view-through: optimistic ROAS |
Break-even calculation and how to read ROAS are covered in ROAS in SMA.
The legitimate criticisms
- Opacity: audience-level reports are limited, which makes it impossible to understand who the advertising was shown to.
- Cannibalisation: Advantage+ readily picks up existing customers and brand traffic, which inflates the apparent results.
- Loss of know-how: the advertiser no longer learns which audiences work, which makes going back to manual management difficult.
- Dependence on measurement: the further the automation goes, the more a faulty measurement costs.

Frequently asked questions
What is Meta Advantage+?
The name Meta gives to its automation features, from a simple setting (placements, budget spread automatically) through to campaigns run entirely by the algorithm such as Advantage+ Shopping, where the advertiser supplies only a catalogue, a budget, creative and exclusions.
Does Advantage+ perform better than a manual campaign?
Generally yes above fifty conversions per week, with a broad offer and reliable measurement: the gains observed range from 10 to 30%. Below that volume, with a narrow audience or a single offer, a manual campaign remains preferable.
Should you exclude existing customers?
Yes, in acquisition. Without an exclusion, 30 to 50% of attributed sales come from customers who would have bought anyway, which inflates ROAS and hides real performance. Advantage+ Shopping also lets you reserve a minimum budget for new customers.
How many creatives should you supply to an Advantage+ campaign?
Six to ten variants, in vertical format, subtitled, with different angles. The algorithm chooses and combines but creates nothing: the quality and variety of the creative remain the first performance factor.
