The essentials
- Four families: awareness (reach, qualified followers), engagement (interactions, comments), traffic and enquiries (clicks, forms), loyalty and service (replies, reviews, community).
- The rule: one main objective per quarter and per network, framed with a figure, a deadline and a metric that can be measured in a tool.
- 2026 SME thresholds: an engagement rate of 1 to 3% on Instagram, 2 to 5% on LinkedIn; 1 to 3% of clicks to the site on posts with a link.
- The trap: followers and likes as the end goal; they do not connect to any business result.
The aim of SMO (Social Media Optimization) is to bring together organic actions on social media. Without a defined objective, it comes down to “posting regularly” and is judged on follower count, a metric that says nothing about the effect on the business. This article sets out four families of objectives, the metric that goes with each one, realistic thresholds and a framing method for an SME.
Connecting SMO to a business objective
An SMO objective follows from a commercial or marketing objective: recruiting, selling online, getting quote requests, building loyalty, becoming known in an area. The question to ask is: “if social media works, what changes for the business in six months?” The answer sets the family of objective, then the metric. A company that answers “more quote requests” is aiming at traffic and enquiries; a company that answers “being identified as a reference in my region” is aiming at awareness.
The four families of objectives and their metrics
| Family | Typical objective | The main metric | Secondary metrics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Being known by a precise target | Reach (accounts reached) within the target | Impressions, qualified followers, mentions, share of voice |
| Engagement | Building a relationship, testing messages | Engagement rate (interactions / reach) | Comments, shares, saves, private messages |
| Traffic and enquiries | Bringing in qualified visitors and enquiries | Clicks to the site and attributed conversions (GA4) | Click-through rate, sign-ups, forms, appointment bookings |
| Loyalty and service | Keeping customers, replying, reassuring | Response time and response rate | Reviews, customer-generated content, repeat purchase rate |
The metrics for each family are detailed in the SMO KPIs. For traffic and enquiries, measurement goes through tagged links and GA4; see social conversions in GA4.
Realistic thresholds for an SME
| Metric | 2026 order of magnitude | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Organic reach per post | 5 to 15% of followers on Facebook, 10 to 30% on Instagram, 5 to 20% on LinkedIn | Depends on the format; short video reaches further |
| Engagement rate | 1 to 3% on Instagram, 2 to 5% on LinkedIn, 0.5 to 1.5% on Facebook, 3 to 8% on TikTok | Calculated on reach, not on followers |
| Click-through rate on a post with a link | 1 to 3% | Platforms limit the reach of outbound links |
| Follower growth | 2 to 5% per month organically | A context metric, not an objective |
| Response time to messages | Under 2 working hours | Displayed publicly by Facebook |
| Share of enquiries coming from social media | 5 to 15% of enquiries for an active B2B SME | Measurable with GA4 and a “how did you hear about us” field |
These orders of magnitude vary by sector and by account size; small accounts have higher engagement rates. Set your baseline on your last three months before aiming for progress. The mechanics of reach are explained in organic reach.
Framing an SMO objective
- A verb and a target: “getting quote requests from SME managers in Loire-Atlantique”.
- A metric and a source: “forms sent from the Social channel in GA4”.
- A figure and a deadline: “15 a month by 31 December, against 6 today”.
- One or two intermediate metrics that explain the result: reach within the target, clicks to the quote page.
- The means: networks selected, frequency, formats, time budget; see the editorial calendar.
One main objective per quarter and per network. LinkedIn can aim at enquiries while Instagram aims at awareness; the two are not measured in the same way and do not call for the same content.
The objectives to avoid
- “Reaching 10,000 followers”: followers connect to nothing; a bought or off-target audience destroys engagement rate and reach.
- “Posting every day”: that is a means, not an objective; see should you post every day.
- “Going viral”: not measurable, not repeatable.
- The same objective for every network: each has its own audience and its own mechanics.
- A direct sales objective on its own: organically, social media prepares the sale; it rarely closes it. The sales lever is advertising; see objectives in social ads.
Tracking and revising
A monthly dashboard per network with the main metric, its intermediate metrics and the actions carried out is enough. Compare with the previous quarter, not the previous month (seasonality, public holidays). Each quarter: the objective is met (raise it or change family), partly met (keep it, adjust the means), missed by a long way (review the target or the network). The analysis method is in analysing your social performance.
How GreenRed helps
Rather than juggling several tools, GreenRed's Social media module brings these metrics together in a single dashboard, compares them over time and tells you which actions come first. You can try it free, with no card, from the Pricing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the first SMO objective to set for an SME starting out?
Awareness with a precise target, measured by reach within that target and by engagement rate, over one quarter. Without a qualified audience, traffic and enquiry objectives cannot be met. Only then should you switch to clicks and enquiries.
How many followers do you need for social media to pay off?
There is no threshold: 500 followers in the right target generate enquiries, 20,000 off-target followers generate none. Measure reach within your target and actions (clicks, messages, forms) rather than the total follower count.
How do you measure enquiries coming from social media?
With tagged links (UTM) in bios and posts, a Social channel in GA4 with the key events (form, call, purchase), and a “how did you hear about us” field in the forms for the enquiries that do not come from a direct click.
Do you need different objectives for each network?
Yes. Audiences and mechanics differ: LinkedIn suits B2B enquiries, Instagram and TikTok awareness and image, Facebook local presence and customer service. One objective per network and per quarter, with its own metric, stops you judging every network on the same criterion.
