Which KPIs should you track to measure your SMO performance?

The ten metrics of an organic social strategy, their formula, their 2026 reference values by network and how to read them together

The essentials

  • Ten metrics: reach, reach rate, engagement rate by reach, qualified engagement, click-through rate, social sessions, attributed conversions, net growth, response time, share of video watched.
  • 2026 benchmarks: reach rate of 2 to 5% of followers on Facebook, 4 to 9% on Instagram, 5 to 10% on LinkedIn; engagement by reach of 3 to 8% on Instagram, 2 to 5% on Facebook.
  • Results: click-through rate of 0.5 to 2% on posts with a link; social sessions generally convert less than search, hence the importance of attribution.
  • How to read it: each KPI is read against its own 90-day series and against the benchmark for its network; never one network against another.

SMO KPIs measure the performance of an organic presence on social media, without advertising. This page keeps ten of them, with the formula to use and the 2026 reference values network by network, taken from the annual studies of social tool publishers (Socialinsider, Rival IQ, Hootsuite, Metricool) and from observations on SME accounts. These benchmarks situate an account; they do not replace the account's own historical series. How to select two or three of these metrics according to the objective is covered in choosing your KPIs according to the objective.

Distribution KPIs

Organic reach and its orders of magnitude, detailed by network, are described in organic reach: definition and figures.

Engagement KPIs

  • Engagement rate by reach: interactions / reach. 2026 benchmarks: Instagram 3 to 8%, Facebook 2 to 5%, TikTok 5 to 10% (per view), LinkedIn 2 to 4% per impression, X 1 to 2% per impression. This is the content quality metric.
  • Engagement rate by followers: interactions / followers. Benchmarks: Instagram 0.4 to 0.7%, Facebook 0.1 to 0.2%, TikTok 2 to 3%, X 0.03 to 0.05%. Used to compare accounts, including competitors.
  • Qualified engagement: comments + shares + saves, in absolute value and as a share of total engagement. A healthy account exceeds 20 to 30% qualified engagement on Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Video view rate: 3-second views / reach, and share of complete views. Benchmarks: more than 50% at 3 seconds, 25 to 35% complete views over 30 seconds.

Result KPIs

Click-through rateLink clicks / reach (native); only to be calculated on posts with a link0.5 to 2%; up to 3 to 5% in a story with a link for an engaged audienceReview the call to action and the placement of the link
Social sessionsGA4 sessions with medium = social (UTM) or the “Organic Social” channelTrack the trend; often 5 to 15% of the traffic of an active SMEIncrease posts with a link, stories with a link
Engagement rate of social sessionsEngaged sessions / sessions (GA4)Generally 10 to 20 points lower than organic searchAdapt the landing page to the mobile context
Attributed conversionsGA4 key events attributed to social + CRM reconciliationConversion rate of social sessions often 0.5 to 2% in B2B, 1 to 3% in e-commerceJudge the return on the effort; adjust the targets
Cost per social leadTotal monthly cost (time + provider + tools) / attributed leadsTo be compared with the company's other channelsArbitrate the budget between channels

Measurement on the site side relies on tagged links and declared conversion events; the setup is described in social conversions in GA4. Without that foundation, result KPIs do not exist and management is limited to distribution.

Relationship and community KPIs

  • Net follower growth: new followers minus unfollows, per month. Benchmark: 1 to 3% per month for an active SME account; also look at the share of followers within the geographic or professional target.
  • Median response time: the time between a comment or a message and the reply. Target: under 24 working hours; under 2 hours for sales questions during the day.
  • Response rate: comments and messages answered / received. Target: 80% and above (excluding spam).
  • Mentions and customer-generated content: monthly volume of mentions, reviews and spontaneous shares; a metric of real awareness.

Reading the KPIs together

An isolated KPI lends itself to any interpretation; it is their combination that speaks. A few common cross-readings:

  1. Reach rising, engagement by reach falling: the content is reaching people outside the target (trend, broad hashtags); refocus the topics.
  2. High engagement, low clicks: the content is liked but calls for nothing; add a call to action and a link in a story or in a comment.
  3. Decent clicks, no conversions: the landing page does not deliver on its promise on mobile; fix the page before producing more.
  4. Followers rising, reach flat: the new followers are not seeing the posts; check where they came from (competition, off-target audience).
  5. Everything falling at once: check the posting rhythm first, then the formats, before blaming the platform; the approach is in analysing your social performance.

The monthly dashboard fits on one page: the two main KPIs tied to the objectives, four to six diagnostic metrics, each with its value for the month, its 90-day median and its network benchmark.

Our advice: set the formula of each KPI in a dated document, with the list of interactions counted and the source. Most disagreements between a provider and its client about “performance” come from two different formulas applied to the same data, not from the data itself.

Frequently asked questions

Which KPI is the most important in SMO?

It depends on the objective: reach for awareness, engagement by reach for consideration, sessions and attributed conversions in GA4 for traffic and leads. The engagement rate by reach is the most universal because it measures content quality and predicts the distribution of the following posts.

What are the reference values for organic reach in 2026?

Related to followers, the average reach of a post sits at around 2 to 5% on Facebook, 4 to 9% on Instagram and 5 to 10% for a LinkedIn page. On TikTok, reach does not depend on followers and is read as the share of views coming from non-followers, often 60 to 90%.

How do you measure conversions coming from social media?

Tag every outbound link with UTM parameters (source = network, medium = social), declare the key events in GA4 (form, call, appointment, purchase) and read the acquisition report by source and campaign. Complete it with the CRM to find out the value of signed leads and with a “how did you hear about us” question.

Should you compare your KPIs with those of competitors?

Yes for engagement by followers, rhythm and formats, which are publicly visible, in order to situate the account. No for reach and clicks, which are invisible from the outside. The most useful comparison remains that of the account with its own 90-day series, with a constant formula.
