The essentials
- Definition: SMA (Social Media Advertising) means paid advertising on social media (Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, X), bought at auction and served to audiences defined by their profile, their behaviour or their relationship with the brand.
- Difference with SMO: SMO is the organic presence (free posts); SMA pays for distribution and targets people who do not follow the brand.
- 2026 costs in France: CPM of €5 to €12 on Meta, €30 to €60 on LinkedIn, €3 to €8 on TikTok; cost per lead of €15 to €120 depending on the platform and the offer.
- Its role: create demand, feed consideration and retarget; it complements SEA, which captures existing demand.
The aim of SMA, which stands for Social Media Advertising, is paid advertising on social media. It differs from the organic presence ( SMO) in that you pay for distribution and choose who sees the message, beyond your followers. It is the advertising lever that has grown the most in SME budgets over the past ten years, because it lets you reach a precise target for a few euros a day. This article defines SMA, explains how it works, compares the platforms and their costs, situates its role and shows where to start. The short definition is in SMA: definition.
SMA, SMO, SMM: the distinctions
| Term | Scope | Cost | Reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMM (Social Media Marketing) | All marketing on social media | Organic and paid | Everything |
| SMO (Social Media Optimization) | Posts, community, profiles, with no paid distribution | Production time | Followers and their network; organic reach in decline |
| SMA (Social Media Advertising) | Targeted paid ads | Media budget + management | Any defined audience, beyond followers |
The three notions are detailed in SMA, SMO, SMM: the differences.
How SMA works
- An objective: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, sales; it tells the platform which action to optimise; see social ads objectives.
- An audience: defined by profile (age, location, job title on LinkedIn), interests and behaviour, relationship with the brand (visitors, engaged users, customers) or by similarity with your customers; increasingly chosen automatically by the platform.
- An auction: every impression is auctioned between advertisers; the platform combines the bid, the probability that the user takes the intended action and the quality of the ad. You pay per impression (CPM), per click or per result.
- A creative: image, short video, carousel, native form; the main human lever in 2026.
- A measurement setup: pixel and conversions API, native forms, UTM and GA4, CRM.
- An optimisation: the algorithm learns on the measured conversions (around 50 per week and per ad set) and adjusts delivery.
The platforms and their costs in 2026
| Platform | French audience | Strengths | CPM | Cost per lead | Who for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta (Facebook, Instagram) | More than 40 million | Targeting, formats, catalogue, remarketing, volume | €5 to €12 | €15 to €60 | Almost every sector, B2C and B2B, local |
| Around 30 million members, 15 million active | Unique professional targeting | €30 to €60 | €40 to €120 | High-value B2B | |
| TikTok | More than 20 million | Reach, video formats, low costs, e-commerce | €3 to €8 | €10 to €40 | B2C, 18-40, visual products |
| Around 15 million | Purchase intent, interiors, fashion, cooking | €4 to €10 | Variable | Lifestyle e-commerce | |
| Snapchat | Around 25 million, young | Vertical formats, augmented reality | €3 to €8 | Variable | Young B2C |
| X | Around 10 million active | News, tech | €5 to €10 | Variable | Niches, awareness |
For a French SME, Meta is the default platform; LinkedIn is added in high-value B2B, TikTok for young targets and visual products. Costs and budgets are detailed in the SMA budget.
What SMA delivers, and what it does not replace
- It creates demand: it reaches people who are not searching yet, which SEA and SEO do not.
- It targets by profile: a target defined by job, age, location or interests rather than by a query.
- It retargets: visitors, viewers, customers, with visual messages.
- It tests quickly: a message, an offer, a target in a few days for a few dozen euros.
- It does not replace: SEA for capturing expressed demand, SEO for lasting visibility, the Google Business Profile listing for local, email for the relationship. The comparison is in SMA vs SEA.
What has changed since 2021
Three shifts shape SMA in 2026. Tracking restrictions (iOS, cookies, consent) have reduced measurement and site audiences; the conversions API and native audiences make up for it. Automation (Advantage+ at Meta, smart targeting elsewhere) takes over the audience, the placements and the budget; human work concentrates on creative, measurement and strategy. Short vertical video has become the dominant format on every platform. The mistakes to avoid in this context are listed in Meta Ads and LinkedIn Ads mistakes.
Where to start
- Set up measurement: pixel and conversions API, events with value, consent, UTM.
- Choose a platform (Meta for most) and a conversion objective.
- Build the audiences: customers (to exclude or retarget), engaged users, lookalikes.
- Produce 3 to 6 creatives in three formats.
- Launch with €20 to €30 per day and per ad set, without touching it for a week.
- Read the cost per result and the ROAS, in the platform and in GA4; see the SMA KPIs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SMA and SMO?
SMO (Social Media Optimization) is the organic presence: posts, community, profiles, with no paid distribution, with a reach limited to followers and in decline. SMA (Social Media Advertising) pays for distribution and targets audiences defined beyond followers, with measurement on results. The two complement each other within SMM.
How much does advertising on social media cost?
In France in 2026: CPM of €5 to €12 on Meta, €30 to €60 on LinkedIn, €3 to €8 on TikTok; cost per lead of €15 to €60 on Meta and €40 to €120 on LinkedIn; cost per purchase varies widely with the basket. The minimum budget for a campaign to learn is €600 to €900 per month per ad set on Meta, €1,500 to €3,000 on LinkedIn.
Which platform should an SME choose?
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) by default, for its audience, its formats and its remarketing; LinkedIn in B2B for offers worth several thousand euros with a target defined by job title; TikTok for targets under 40 and visual products. Start with one platform and one objective, measure, then extend.
Does SMA still work with tracking restrictions?
Yes, differently: measurement runs through the pixel completed by the conversions API and through modelled conversions; audiences rely more on native engagement (videos, posts) and customer lists than on site visitors; automation makes up for the loss of targeting granularity. Results are still there for well-measured accounts.
