The essentials
- Definition: SMA (Social Media Advertising) covers all paid advertising run on social networks (Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, X).
- The key difference: SMO is free and slow, SMA is paid and immediate; the two complement each other.
- Costs: in France, expect a CPM of €5 to €12 on Meta and a CPC of €5 to €10 on LinkedIn (2025-2026 orders of magnitude, highly variable by sector).
- KPIs: CPM, CPC, click-through rate, cost per acquisition and ROAS are the five metrics to watch every week.
The aim of SMA, for Social Media Advertising, refers to all paid advertising activity run on social networks. In practice, it means buying visibility with a precise audience on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat or X, through those platforms' ad systems. In France it is also called "publicité sociale" or "social ads".
SMA stands opposite SMO (Social Media Optimization), which covers the unpaid work: posting, community management, profile optimisation. Together the two make up SMM (Social Media Marketing).
How does Social Media Advertising work?
Each platform has its own ad manager: Meta Ads Manager for Facebook and Instagram, LinkedIn Campaign Manager, TikTok Ads Manager. The principle is always the same:
- You set an objective : awareness, traffic to the site, lead generation, sales or app installs.
- You target an audience : demographic criteria, interests, behaviours, or audiences built from your own data (site visitors, customers, lookalike audiences).
- You set a budget and a bid : the platform runs a real-time auction at each impression, combining your bid, your ad's estimated quality and the likelihood the user reacts.
- You measure through a pixel or a conversions API installed on your site, such as the Meta pixel.
SMA's strength lies in the precision of the targeting and the range of formats (image, carousel, short video, collection, lead form). Its limit: intent is low. The user asked for nothing, unlike a Google search. That is what separates SMA from SEA, compared in detail in our article SMA vs SEA.
SMA, SMO, SMM: what's the difference?
| Acronym | Meaning | Cost | Time to effect | The full destination URL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SMO | Social Media Optimization | People's time only | Several months | Publishing three LinkedIn posts a week |
| SMA | Social Media Advertising | Media budget + creative | Immediate, as long as the budget runs | An Instagram conversion campaign on a product |
| SMM | Social Media Marketing | SMO + SMA | Mixed | A brand's overall social strategy |

How much does SMA cost in France?
There is no fixed price: the cost comes out of an auction and depends on the sector, the season, the quality of the creative and the competition for the audience targeted. The orders of magnitude below are what we see on the French small-business accounts we work with and in the benchmarks published by ad platforms and agencies in 2025-2026. They are a reference point, not a promise.
| Platform | CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) | CPC (cost per click) | Audience profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta (Facebook, Instagram) | €5 to €12 | €0.30 to €1.50 | General public, B2C, local |
| €25 to €60 | €5 to €10 | B2B, decision-makers, recruitment | |
| TikTok | €3 to €8 | €0.20 to €1 | 18-34, awareness, e-commerce |
| €2 to €6 | €0.10 to €0.60 | Interiors, fashion, DIY, purchase planning |
The media budget is only part of the cost. Add the production of visuals and video, the time spent managing it (or an agency's fees) and the measurement tools. Our guide what budget to plan for an SMA strategy sets out a typical split for a small business.
The KPIs to track in SMA
An ad account produces dozens of metrics. Five are enough to steer by:
- CPM : the price of visibility. If it climbs, your audience is saturated or too heavily contested. See the definition of CPM.
- CTR (click-through rate) : how relevant your creative is. Below 0.8% on Meta, change the visual or the hook.
- CPC : the cost of a qualified visit. Details in CPC in social ads.
- CPA (cost per acquisition) : what you actually pay for a lead or a sale. This is the metric that should guide your budget decisions.
- ROAS : the revenue generated per €1 spent. A ROAS of 3 means €3 of sales per euro invested. The full definition of ROAS.
The complete list, with alert thresholds by objective, is in which KPIs to track in your SMA campaigns.
Which businesses is SMA right for?
SMA suits almost any business, provided you pick the right platform. An online clothing shop will do better on Instagram and TikTok; a B2B consultancy on LinkedIn; a restaurant or a tradesperson on Facebook with targeting within a 10 to 20 km radius. SMA is particularly effective for:
- launching an offer or a product quickly, without waiting for SEO to take effect;
- retargeting visitors who didn't convert (see retargeting on social media) ;
- recruiting followers or prospects within a tightly defined audience;
- testing a message or a visual before using it on other channels.
It is, on the other hand, a poor fit for products with high search intent and a short cycle, where Google Ads catches the user at the precise moment of need. In most cases the right answer is a combination: Google Ads for existing demand, SMA to create demand and to follow up.

Frequently asked questions
What does SMA mean in digital marketing?
SMA stands for Social Media Advertising, meaning paid advertising run on social networks (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, X). The term stands opposite SMO, which covers the unpaid work on those same networks.
What is the difference between SMA and SEA?
SEA (Search Engine Advertising) runs ads on search engines, in response to a query: purchase intent is high. SMA runs ads on social networks based on audience targeting: reach is broad but intent is lower. SEA captures demand, SMA creates it.
What minimum budget do you need to start with SMA?
Technically, a few euros a day is enough. To get usable data, plan on €300 to €500 over two weeks on a single platform, excluding the creative. That test gives you your own costs (CPM, CPC, CPA) and lets you decide on a realistic monthly budget.
What are the main ad formats in SMA?
The most common formats are the single image, the carousel (several visuals to swipe through), short video (Reels, TikTok, Shorts), the collection (a product catalogue) and the built-in lead form, which saves the user leaving the platform. Short video is today the format with the best cost per result on Meta and TikTok.
