Tracking your SEO rankings: the method, the tools and the traps

What Search Console really measures, when a rank tracker becomes necessary, which queries to watch and how to read the variations

The essentials

  • Two sources: Search Console (the real average position, free, across every query) and rank tracking tools (a daily position on a chosen list, competitors, results page features).
  • What to track: 20 to 100 target queries tied to pages and to objectives, not thousands of keywords.
  • How to read it: a position moves several places a day for no reason; judge on 4-week trends and on clicks.
  • The real metric: the traffic and conversions of the pages, which the positions explain.

Tracking your positions is the most direct way of knowing whether the SEO work is paying off, but it is also the most badly read metric: personalised positions, misleading averages, meaningless daily variations. This article explains what each source measures, which queries to track, how often, and how to turn positions into decisions.

What Search Console measures

The Search Console Performance report gives, for each query and each page, the impressions, the clicks, the click-through rate and the average position : the average of your best result's positions across every impression, all users and locations combined. It is the most reliable data because it comes from Google and covers every query. Its limits: it is an average (a page in position 2 for half of users and 12 for the other shows 7), a 2-day delay, 16 months of history, and queries anonymised at low volumes. The detail is in the Performance report.

A rank tracker becomes necessary as soon as you work on competitive queries, have a local dimension, or have to report to a client or a leadership team. For a brochure site just starting, Search Console is enough for six months.

Which queries to track

  1. The keyword plan's target queries: one main query per strategic page, plus 2 to 4 secondary ones; see keyword research.
  2. Brand queries: to spot a competitor bidding on them or a site impersonating you.
  3. Competitors' queries where they rank and you don't: that is the gap to close.
  4. Local queries with the town, by geographic point if you depend on the local pack.

A list of 20 to 100 queries, each tied to a page and an objective (traffic, enquiry, sale), reads in ten minutes a week. A list of 2,000 keywords never gets read. Group them by theme or by page so you can read averages per group.

Frequency and reading the variations

  • Daily: only to spot a sudden fall (a penalty, a technical problem, a deindexed page). Take no decision on a one-day variation.
  • Weekly: reading the query groups and the pages that move, cross-referenced with recent actions.
  • Monthly: a review with impressions, clicks, conversions and next month's actions.

Positions fluctuate by 1 to 3 places from one day to the next for no reason, more so on competitive queries and during Google updates. A trend is judged over 4 weeks. Three useful readings: a page moving from 15th to 8th gains few clicks but is ready for further effort; a page moving from 4th to 6th loses half its clicks; a stable position with falling clicks signals a change in the results page (an AI Overview, a new block) rather than a ranking problem. Snippets and AI Overviews are covered in position zero and the AI featured snippet.

The dashboard

Useful tracking fits on one page: the target query groups with their average position and 4-week trend, non-brand impressions and clicks (Search Console), the pages gaining and losing, organic conversions per page (GA4), and the results page features held or lost. Updated automatically, it saves manual exports and makes the variations readable for an owner. To judge a supplier from this data, see measuring your SEO agency's results.

Our advice: in Search Console, compare the last 28 days with the same period the previous year, filter out brand queries and sort by impressions. The queries losing positions with many impressions are your urgent cases; those between 5th and 15th with many impressions are your best opportunities.

Frequently asked questions

Is Search Console enough for tracking your positions?

For a brochure site just starting, yes: it gives the real average position of every query, free. A rank tracker becomes useful for daily positions, competitor tracking, local by geographic point and the results page features (snippets, AI Overviews).

Why do my positions change every day?

Google constantly tests the order of results, personalises by location and device, and rolls out updates. Variations of 1 to 3 places a day are normal. Judge on a 4-week trend and on clicks, not on a daily reading.

How many keywords should you track?

Between 20 and 100 for a small business, each tied to a page and an objective, grouped by theme. Beyond that, the list stops being read and the decisions don't follow. Tools charge by the number of queries; a short list is also cheaper.

How do you track your positions in AI Overviews and on ChatGPT?

Recent tracking tools show whether an AI Overview appears on the query and whether your site is cited in it. For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, you need GEO tracking tools that query the assistants on a list of questions. That tracking complements classic positions without replacing them.
