What is an AI featured snippet, and how do you get cited in one?

What Google's AI Overviews are, how they differ from position zero, which queries they appear on and what gets a page cited

The essentials

  • Definition: the AI featured snippet, or AI Overview, is an answer block generated by a language model from several pages, shown at the top of Google's results with the sources cited.
  • The difference with position zero: the classic snippet extracts a passage from a single page; the AI Overview writes a synthesis and cites 3 to 10 sources.
  • Where it appears: informational, comparative and procedural queries; rarely on brand, local or simple transactional queries.
  • Getting cited: direct, structured answers, verifiable facts, an identified author, a page that already ranks well.

Since 2024, Google has been showing on a growing share of queries a block written by AI, theAI Overview , which many call an AI featured snippet by analogy with position zero. The block answers the question in a few sentences, with links to the pages used. For a site, being cited there is becoming an objective on a par with ranking. This article explains the mechanism, the queries concerned and the practices that raise your chances of citation.

Featured snippet (position zero)AI Overview
ExampleA textual extract from a page, as it standsA synthesis written by a model from several pages
SourcesOne page, with a title and a link3 to 10 pages, as cards or links in the margin
PositionAbove the organic resultsRight at the top, sometimes above the ads, expandable
QueriesQuestions, definitions, lists, comparisonsThe same families, plus complex queries with several sub-questions
Effect on clicksCaptures a share of the clicksReduces clicks on the query (the user has their answer); the sources cited keep qualified traffic
ControlThe nosnippet and max-snippet tagsThe same tags; excluding also removes the citation

Which queries AI Overviews appear on

The tracking studies (Semrush, BrightEdge, Ahrefs, 2025-2026) converge: overviews trigger mostly on long informational queries ("how to choose", "difference between", "is it"), on health, finance, technology and DIY questions, and on comparisons. They are rare on brand queries, local queries with a local pack, ready-to-buy product searches and breaking news. The share of queries concerned varies by country and sector; in France it sits in a range of 10 to 30% of informational queries depending on the measurement. Check on your own queries: modern rank tracking flags the presence of an overview and the sources cited.

How Google chooses the sources

  • Ranking first: most cited sources come from top 10 pages on the query or on neighbouring queries. Classic SEO remains the foundation.
  • The direct answer: the extracted passages resemble those of classic snippets: a sentence that answers, a fact, a figure, a step.
  • Perceived reliability: an identified author, sources cited, a date, consistency with the other reference pages. See YMYL topics for the heightened requirements.
  • Structure: subheadings phrased as questions, lists, tables, FAQs; the models extract more easily from content that is already broken up.
  • Diversity: the overview cites sources of different types (media, expert, forum, official site); an expert small business site is cited if it brings a precise angle.

The method for getting cited

  1. Identify the queries with an overview where you are in the top 10 without being cited: that is your working list.
  2. Rewrite the answer passage under a subheading that repeats the question, in 40 to 60 words, factual, with no detour.
  3. Add what the cited sources lack: a figure, an example, a comparison table, a nuance. The overview looks for complements, not repetitions.
  4. Sign and date: an author with an "about" page, an update date, external sources cited.
  5. Mark it up: Article or BlogPosting with author, FAQPage for questions, Organization for the site; see structuring your pages for AI.
  6. Measure: citations obtained (a tracking tool), traffic to the pages concerned (GA4), impressions and clicks (Search Console). Search Console folds clicks from overviews into the total without separating them.

These practices also apply to external assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini), whose citation criteria are similar; the full approach is described in appearing in LLM results and the GEO KPIs.

The effect on traffic, and how to react

On queries with an overview, organic clicks fall, by 15 to 40% according to the studies, because some users are content with the synthesis. The pages cited lose less and receive more engaged traffic. Three responses: aim for the citation rather than suffer it; shift part of the content effort towards commercial or local intent queries, where overviews are rare; and measure visibility (impressions, citations) as well as clicks, so you don't wrongly conclude that SEO has stopped working.

Our advice: open the AI Overview on your five main queries and read the sources cited. What those pages have and yours doesn't (a figure, a table, a sharper answer, an author) is exactly the change to make.

Frequently asked questions

Does the AI featured snippet replace position zero?

No. The two coexist: the AI Overview appears on some informational queries, the classic snippet remains on the others, and some pages show both. The criteria for being extracted or cited are similar: a direct answer, a clear structure, a well-ranked page.

Can you stop Google using your content in AI Overviews?

The nosnippet and max-snippet tags limit the extract shown, including in overviews; the Google-Extended directive in robots.txt concerns training the Gemini models, not search. Excluding your content also removes the citation and the traffic that comes with it; that is rarely the right choice.

How do I know whether my site is cited in an AI Overview?

Search Console doesn't separate it out. Rank tracking tools (Semrush, Ahrefs, Monitorank, GreenRed) detect the presence of an overview on each query and list the sources cited. You can also check manually in a private window.

Do you have to write differently for AI Overviews?

Not fundamentally: the pages that win classic snippets are the ones being cited. Insist on direct answers under question-shaped subheadings, verifiable and sourced facts, tables and lists, an identified author. Avoid long introductions before the answer.
