When an AI engine answers a question, it draws on pages it has consulted and, in most interfaces, cites them: a link, a title, sometimes a sentence summarising what the page contributes. That is the rich citation, the AI engine's equivalent of a search result. It has become the gateway to a new kind of traffic and a measure of visibility in generative AI. This article describes how it works and the criteria that trigger it.

A citation is called rich when it goes beyond the bare link: it attributes a specific piece of information ("according to GreenRed, a description should be between 110 and 160 characters") or summarises the page. That is the form that builds visibility, because the site's name is associated with a fact.
How an AI engine builds the citation
- Search: the engine rephrases the question into several queries and searches an index (Google's, Bing's, or its own).
- Selection: it keeps around ten pages, generally well ranked, and reads their content.
- Extraction: it isolates the passages that answer, the facts, the figures, the definitions; a self-contained passage (understandable without the rest of the page) is favoured.
- Synthesis: it writes the answer and attaches each assertion to the page it came from.
- Display: it presents the sources with title, domain and, depending on the interface, a summary.
Two practical consequences: ranking in the classic engines remains a prerequisite (see indexing by AI), and the page must contain passages a machine can extract and attribute unambiguously.

Earning rich citations: the approach
- Choose the questions your customers put to assistants, by testing them yourself on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google: note who is cited and why.
- Produce the reference answer on your site: a one-sentence definition, figures, a table, an example, sources.
- Sign it: an author with verifiable expertise, an identified organisation, Article and Organization markup.
- Open up access: check robots.txt for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, ClaudeBot; blocking training doesn't always block search, but blocking search removes every citation.
- Maintain it: update the figures and the date; the engines prefer recent sources.
Measuring citations
Two measurements complement each other. Frequently asked questions
Does a rich citation bring traffic?
Yes, but less than a classic first-position result: some users are content with the answer. Traffic from AI engines is, however, highly qualified (longer visits, a higher conversion rate according to 2025-2026 studies) and mentioning the site's name builds recognition.
Do you have to be on Google's first page to be cited by an AI?
That is the most frequent case for Google's AI Overviews and for ChatGPT or Perplexity, which rely on classic search indexes. A badly ranked page can be cited if it is the only one answering a sub-question precisely, but that is the exception.
What is the difference between a citation and a mention in an AI?
A mention is your brand's name in the answer, with no link and no attribution ("tools such as GreenRed"). A citation is the attribution of information to a specific page, with a link. Both are measurable; the citation generates traffic, the mention builds recognition.
Does structured data help you get cited?
Indirectly. It doesn't trigger the citation but helps the engines identify the author, the organisation, the date and the type of content, all of which feed into the assessment of reliability. Article, Organization, Person and FAQPage are the most useful.
