The essentials
- Principle: one main network to invest in, one or two secondary networks fed by adaptation, and accounts closed or put on hold elsewhere.
- Adaptation: one source piece of content (video or article) produces four to six adapted posts; production time per additional network falls to 20 to 30% of the first.
- Centralisation: a single calendar, a combined inbox for comments and messages, a shared dashboard; tools from €20 to €100 a month.
- 2026 workload: 8 to 12 hours a week for two networks kept up properly, 15 to 20 hours for three with video; beyond that, a dedicated role.
Being present on four networks does not multiply results by four; without organisation, it divides quality by four. The question is not how many networks to keep up but how to rank them, produce once to post several times, and centralise what can be centralised. This page describes the set-up that lets a small team keep two or three networks going over time, with the tools and the benchmark times for 2026.
Prioritise: one main, some secondary, some dormant
The first choice is to give up on treating networks equally. A main network gets native content, video, moderation within the hour and outbound engagement; it is the one where your customers are and where your results are measurable. One or two secondary networks get adapted versions and daily moderation. The other accounts are closed or put on hold with a message pointing elsewhere, rather than left abandoned with a last post dated 2023.
| Main target | Main network | Secondary | To put on hold unless there is a specific reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Businesses, decision-makers (B2B) | YouTube, Instagram (employer brand) | TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest | |
| Consumers, local retail | Instagram or Facebook depending on the age of the customer base | The other of the two, TikTok if under 35, Google Business Profile | LinkedIn (outside recruitment), X |
| Young general public, visual products | TikTok or Instagram | YouTube Shorts, Pinterest | Facebook, LinkedIn |
| Crafts, interiors, cooking, tourism | Pinterest, Facebook, YouTube | X, LinkedIn | |
| Recruitment | Instagram, TikTok (hard-to-fill trades) | X |
The choice is checked with two pieces of data: the make-up of each account's audience (age, location) and the contacts attributed to each network in GA4 thanks to tagged links; see social conversions in GA4.
Produce once, adapt into five formats
Adaptation is what makes multi-network work sustainable. One source piece of content, produced once a week or fortnight, feeds every account:
- Source: a 2 to 4 minute straight-to-camera video on a customer question, or an article from the website.
- Short vertical video of 30 to 60 seconds taken from the source: Reels, TikTok, Shorts, LinkedIn.
- Carousel of 6 to 8 slides covering the key points: Instagram, LinkedIn (PDF).
- Structured text of 800 to 1,300 characters: LinkedIn, Facebook.
- Single visual with the key figure or sentence: all networks, stories.
- Question or poll to open the conversation: stories, LinkedIn, Facebook.
Each adapted version is adjusted in format and tone, never copied and pasted; the differences are described in adapting your tone to each network. Posts are staggered by a few hours to a few days between networks. In working time, the first post costs most of the effort; each additional version takes 20 to 30% of the initial time.
Centralise the calendar, moderation and measurement
Three functions are worth centralising:
- The timescale: a single table with a network column, showing the overall workload and the adapted versions; see creating an editorial calendar.
- Moderation: a unified inbox for comments and messages from every account, with a fixed daily 20-minute slot. Without it, Instagram messages go unanswered while Facebook is being watched.
- Measurement: a shared dashboard with the same metrics per network (reach, engagement by reach, clicks, attributed contacts), read once a month.
| Tool | Calendar and scheduling | Unified inbox | Multi-network reporting | 2026 price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Business Suite | Facebook and Instagram only | Yes (Meta) | Basic | Free |
| Metricool | Yes, all the usual networks | Yes | Yes, with GA4 | Free; €20 to €50 / month |
| Swello | Yes | Yes | Yes | €10 to €60 / month |
| Agorapulse | Yes | Yes, advanced (attribution, labels) | Yes | €80 to €150 / month |
| Hootsuite | Yes | Yes | Yes | €100 / month and up |
| GreenRed | No (tracking) | No | Yes, social media + GA4 + other channels on the same dashboard | See the pricing |
Scheduling itself has its rules (native formats, times, what should not be scheduled); they are in scheduling your posts: tools and good practice.
The typical weekly set-up
For two networks kept up properly, count 8 to 12 hours a week; for three with a weekly video, 15 to 20 hours. A typical week for someone working part-time on the subject:
- Monday (2 h): producing the week's source content (filming or writing), reading the previous week's statistics.
- Tuesday (2 h): editing and adapted versions, scheduling the week.
- Every day (20 min): centralised moderation, replies, outbound engagement on the main network.
- Friday (30 min): collecting the raw material for the following week (photos, customer questions, news).
- Once a month (1 h 30): planning the month, a review per network, three decisions.
When the workload exceeds capacity, the answer is not to reduce quality everywhere but to put a network on hold. The choice of outsourcing all or part of it is covered in choosing a community manager or an agency.
How GreenRed helps
Rather than juggling several tools, GreenRed's Social media module brings these metrics together in a single dashboard, compares them over time and tells you which actions come first. You can try it free, with no card, from the Pricing.
Frequently asked questions
How many social networks should an SME be present on?
Two networks kept up properly, sometimes three if video is produced in batches, are enough for most SMEs. The criterion is where your customers are and your capacity to post regularly and reply every day. An abandoned account damages your image more than no account at all.
Can you post the same content on every network?
The same subject, yes; the same post, no. Each network has its formats, its length, its tone and its habits (link in the comments on LinkedIn, vertical on TikTok and Reels, short text on Facebook). Produce a source piece of content then adapt it into four to six formats, staggering the posts.
Which tool should you use to manage several social networks in one place?
Metricool and Swello cover scheduling, the unified inbox and reporting for €10 to €60 a month; Agorapulse and Hootsuite add team and advanced moderation features from €80 to €100 a month. For Facebook and Instagram alone, the free Meta Business Suite is enough.
How much time does it take to manage three social networks?
Count 15 to 20 hours a week for three networks with a weekly video, adapted versions, daily moderation and a monthly review. Below 10 hours, cut back to two networks or outsource production. The time per additional network drops sharply if adaptation is organised.
