Community management: definition, remit and organisation

What the job covers in 2026, how time splits between animation, moderation and production, the skills expected and the metrics it is judged on

The essentials

  • Definition: community management is the animation and moderation of a community on behalf of a brand on social media and in discussion spaces; it covers the relationship with members, not just posting.
  • Remit: post, reply, moderate, listen, escalate; in 2026, short-form video production is added almost everywhere.
  • Time: 6 to 12 hours a week for two networks in an SME; a full-time role from three active networks with video.
  • The difference: the social media manager sets the strategy and the budgets; the community manager executes and animates; in an SME, one person often does both.

Community management covers all the actions involved in animating, growing and moderating a community on behalf of an organisation, mainly on social media but also on forums, in groups, in online reviews and in a brand's discussion spaces. The term is often reduced to « posting on social »; that is the visible part, not the most important one. This page describes the job as it is practised in 2026, its remit, the time it takes and how to judge it. The definition of SMO as a whole is in SMO: definition.

What the job covers

The community manager works on two levels. The first is conversation: replying to comments and messages, restarting discussions, thanking, defusing, directing people to customer service or sales. The second is content: writing, producing or commissioning the posts that feed that conversation. In 2026, three changes have widened the scope:

  • short-form video has become the dominant format, and the community manager often films and edits it personally;
  • messaging (Instagram, WhatsApp Business, Messenger, LinkedIn) concentrates a growing share of enquiries, with an expectation of a reply within the hour for sales questions;
  • online reviews and local groups are part of the ground, particularly for shops and local services.

The tasks and their weight in the week

TaskExampleShare of time (SME, 2 networks)
Content productionCopy, visuals, filming and video editing, scheduling40 to 50%
Moderation and repliesComments, private messages, reviews, mentions, reports20 to 30%
AnimationOutbound interactions with accounts in the target audience, taking part in groups, follow-ups, competitions, collaborations10 to 15%
Monitoring and listeningNetwork trends, competitors, brand mentions, sensitive topics5 to 10%
Measurement and reportingWeekly review, monthly summary, recommendations5 to 10%

Outbound animation is the most neglected task and one of the most profitable: usefully commenting on posts from accounts your target audience follows brings profile visits and qualified followers, with no budget. The engagement levers are detailed in increasing engagement on your posts.

Community manager and social media manager: the difference

The two job titles overlap in small organisations but refer to different levels. The social media manager sets the strategy (objectives, networks, editorial line, organic and paid budgets), steers the metrics and coordinates providers. The community manager executes and animates day to day. In an SME, one person often combines the two, in-house or at a provider; the distinction mainly serves to avoid mistaking an absence of strategy for a failure of execution. The SMO, SMM and SMA families are compared in SMA, SMO and SMM: the differences.

The skills expected in 2026

  1. Copywriting: writing short, error-free copy in the brand's tone, with a hook for each post.
  2. Visual and video production: command of a design tool (Canva, Adobe Express) and an editing tool (CapCut or equivalent), framing and sound on a smartphone.
  3. Customer relations: knowing how to answer a public complaint, recognise a situation to escalate and keep the tone under attack.
  4. Reading the data: understanding reach, engagement, clicks and conversions, and drawing decisions from them; see analysing your social performance.
  5. Organisation: keeping to a calendar, following an approval circuit, producing in batches.
  6. Platform knowledge: formats, advertising and moderation rules, frequent changes.

Generative AI tools now assist with copywriting, adapting posts per network and subtitling; they replace neither knowledge of the customer nor the relationship. A community manager who publishes generated text without anchoring it in the reality of the business produces content the audience recognises and ignores.

Judging community management

Community management is judged on conversation metrics as much as on distribution: median response time (target under 24 working hours, under 2 hours for sales questions during the day), comment response rate (80% and above), the share of comments and shares within engagement, net follower growth within the target audience and, on the results side, traffic and leads attributed in GA4. An account that posts a lot but does not reply is not managed, it is fed.

Our advice: set aside a fixed 20-minute slot every day for moderation and outbound animation, before any content production. It is the part of the job that produces the most qualified followers and leads, and the first to be sacrificed when the week fills up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between community management and social media management?

Social media management covers strategy: objectives, choice of networks, editorial line, organic and paid budgets, steering the metrics. Community management covers day-to-day execution and animation: posting, replies, moderation, monitoring. In an SME, the same person frequently handles both roles.

How much time does community management take in an SME?

Allow 8 to 12 hours a week for two networks with six to eight posts, including one short-form video every two weeks, and daily moderation. A full-time role is justified from three active networks with weekly video, or a high volume of customer messages.

Does a community manager need to be able to make video?

In 2026, yes in most cases: short-form video is the most widely distributed format on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, and is growing on LinkedIn. Filming on a smartphone and editing with CapCut or an equivalent is a basic skill; more elaborate production can still go to a provider.

How do you assess a community manager?

On conversation and results, not on volume published: response time and rate, quality of exchanges, follower growth within the target audience, engagement per reach, traffic and leads attributed to social in GA4. Add the consistency of the calendar and the quality of the monthly reporting.
