GEO marketing: making your brand visible in AI answers

What the term covers, the confusion with geomarketing, why it matters to a small business in 2026, and the method for getting started

The essentials

  • Definition: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) covers everything that increases the presence of a brand, its pages and its products in answers generated by AI (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews).
  • Beware the homonym: geomarketing (the geographic analysis of markets and catchment areas) has nothing to do with it.
  • What's at stake: a growing share of searches begins in an assistant; answers cite 3 to 10 sources and half of users no longer click.
  • Method: target questions, a presence audit, reference content, authority and source consistency, structured data, measurement.

The term GEO, for Generative Engine Optimization, is the discipline of getting a brand into the answers of AI engines and assistants. It appeared in 2023 in an academic paper and took hold in 2024-2025 with Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT's web search. In marketing, it is added to SEO rather than replacing it. This article defines its scope, clears up the ambiguity with geomarketing, explains what is at stake for a small business and sets out the method. The short definition is in GEO: definition.

GEO and geomarketing: two different things

SubjectVisibility inside generative AI answersThe geographic analysis of customers, markets and locations
ToolsCitation tracking in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews; content; structured dataMapping, national statistics data, catchment areas, drive-time zones
Typical question"Which tools does ChatGPT recommend when asked for marketing management software for a small business?""Where should we open the next branch?"
Relationship to localLocal GEO exists: "best plumber in Nantes" put to an assistantIt is its core

When a provider offers you "GEO", check which one they mean. On this site, GEO always means optimisation for generative engines.

Why GEO matters in 2026

  • Behaviour is changing: a growing share of information and comparison searches begins in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot; in France, 2025-2026 studies put the proportion of people using an assistant to search each week at between 15 and 30%.
  • Google itself: AI Overviews and AI Mode answer directly on 10 to 30% of informational queries; clicks are falling, and citations are becoming the new page one; see the AI featured snippet.
  • Answers are concentrated: an answer cites 3 to 10 sources; being absent from a recommendation means being absent from the decision.
  • Brand recommendations: asked "which software should I choose for…", the assistant names 3 to 5 brands. Those are market shares.
  • Traffic from AI is still small (0.5 to 3% of sessions) but converts better and is growing fast; see identifying AI traffic in GA4.

What makes a brand get cited

Presence in the sources AI readsPages ranking well in Google and Bing, Wikipedia, media, directories, reviews, Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTubeSolid SEO, consistent multi-platform presence; see the sources generative AI uses
Extractable contentDirect answers, facts, figures, tables, definitions, FAQsRewrite your key pages as self-contained answers; see structuring content for LLMs
A clear entityAI knows who you are: name, sector, offer, location, differences — consistent everywhereAn "about us" page, Organization structured data, aligned profiles
Authority and freshnessRecent sources, a named author, cited by othersDates, authors, mentions in media and comparison sites
Technical accessibilityAI crawlers allowed, content present in the HTMLrobots.txt, server-side rendering; see indexing by AI

The method in six steps

  1. List your target questions: 20 to 50 questions your customers put to an assistant, from the generic ("what is…") to the decisive ("which tool / provider for… in [city]").
  2. Audit your presence: put those questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (AI Overview), note the brands and sources cited, and whether you're there or not; see auditing your visibility on AI engines.
  3. Produce the reference content that answers those questions better than the sources being cited: a direct answer, figures, comparison tables, examples, sources.
  4. Consolidate your entity: a complete "about us" page, structured data, consistent profiles, mentions in your sector's comparison sites and media.
  5. Open up and structure the technical side: AI crawlers allowed, clean HTML, FAQPage, Article with an author.
  6. Measure and iterate every month: citations by question and by engine, share of voice against competitors, AI referral traffic, conversions; see GEO KPIs.

GEO and SEO: the same work seen from two sides

Assistants rely on search indexes to pick their sources; a page absent from Google's or Bing's top results is rarely cited. SEO therefore remains the foundation; GEO adds the requirement of extractability (a machine must be able to isolate and attribute an answer), entity consistency, and presence on the platforms AI reads beyond your site. The two are measured differently but worked on together; see GEO and SEO.

Our advice: start by putting to ChatGPT and Perplexity the question your customers ask before choosing you ("which [your trade] would you recommend in [your city]?" or "which tool for [your use case]?"). Note who gets cited, and why. That is your starting GEO audit; everything else follows from it.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI assistants pick their sources from search indexes: a page absent from Google's or Bing's top results is rarely cited. SEO remains the foundation; GEO adds structuring your content for extraction, entity consistency and presence on the platforms AI reads.

Does GEO mean geomarketing?

No. Geomarketing is the geographic analysis of markets and catchment areas. GEO here means Generative Engine Optimization, optimising for AI engines and assistants. The shared abbreviation causes confusion in providers' offers: ask which one they mean.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity react within weeks to a page that ranks well and is well structured. Brand recommendations from ChatGPT depend on multiple sources (comparison sites, reviews, media) and shift over 3 to 6 months. Monthly citation tracking is what lets you see the progress.

Is GEO worth it for a small local business?

Yes: assistants increasingly answer "which [trade] near me" by drawing on your Google listing, your reviews and your local pages. A complete listing, recent reviews and a clear location page are a local business's first GEO actions — and they serve local SEO too.
